I am the vice -president of Unifor Local 593- representing workers at the Hamilton Biox Bio-Diesel facility.
I stand in full support of this proposed policy. The American decision to eliminate the tax credits for non-domestic producers has created an unfair playing field and idled all Ontario Bio-Diesel facilities.
It has flooded Ontario with foreign made Bio-Diesel.
Having Bio-Diesel facilities operating in Ontario ensures there are local facilities to fully utilize all applicable waste streams generated in Ontario.
This policy change will restart and fully utilize the 3 facilities in Ontario.
The policy will generate interest in investment by expanding and or building new facilities to meet the domestic demand for the current Bio-Diesel requirement in all Diesel in Ontario.
Being responsible stewards of our land, water and air requires us to have a full circle approach to everything we produce in Ontario, reusing the generated waste is a critical part in completing that circle. The Bio-Diesel industry not only reuses that waste but the product lowers GHG emissions and reduces the emissions from arguably the biggest air polluters in Ontario.
