My 1st thought directed to Ford + his government, business partners + anyone who stands to receive financial benefit is - "Are you all crazy, supporters of our own mass destruction, never mind the natural world + the environment we depend on to support us? How short-sighted can you all be to be motivated by greed? The similarity to Trump + his government is distressing + frightening.
We NEED our natural world. This isn’t some left-wing, tree hugging, animal activist person making these comments + observations. I'm 72, a world traveller + a realist. I know we need housing. I know we need transportation routes. I support building "up" not out. I've been in India, China, Bangkok (+ all over Thailand but Bangkok is a truly crowded city), to name a few intensely populated places so I know what crowded cities + countries mean. We are nowhere near that population intensity so we have time to think + move cautiously. I also know that we need to eat food, drink water + breathe air which fortunately our planet has provided us with in the past. If we destroy our environment, which supports our lives + well-being, how do you plan on meeting our most basic human needs for life. Not life as we know it - just plain, ordinary life! I've also been in Bhutan. Granted the population there is small but their philosophy is huge. Voted as 1 of the happiest countries on our planet because the inhabitants of Bhutan know that all we need is "enough". Although not a lot, they have enough to share, keep themselves sheltered, fed + clothed. Our greed will negatively impact the innocent along with yourselves. Open up highway 407 for free travel. That will help reduce the 401 traffic nightmore; or restrict the 407 to trucks + commercial vehicles. That will also reduce congestion on the 401 + make safer commutes for car occupants. As for a tunnel under the 401. Have you lost all sensible thoughts? Many cities have solved transportation challenges by building transportation routes on raised platforms. Chicago, Bangkok, Dubai, Kuala Lumpur to name a few, have their rail transit above the roads. As a tourist that is great because it gives a birds' eye view of where you're going + shows you places you might want to visit. We don’t need another highway up north. We don’t need a tunnel underground. We need common sense to direct future decisions. I hate driving on the 401 + fortunately don’t often need to. The new lanes addition should be for dedicated commuter bus routes to encourage more people to use mass transit. I'm sure if there were many pick-up sites established that went from 1 point to a central Toronto point, without multiple stops along the way, or any stops, that more people would take a commuter bus + leave their cars at home. But I have digressed from the main point + purpose of this rant! Please, stop destroying our natural habitat + threatening the lives of all wildlife. Everything on this planet serves a necessary + useful purpose - except for people. We won't outlive the dinosaurs or anything else that went extinct. We are + will continue to be the makers of our own demise if we don't (and I mean YOU in this instance!) Smarten Up. A plover is NOT an insignificant species. I personally think mosquitoes are unnecessary but they certainly aren't insignificant. I hate them because they really seem to love me. Birds, reptiles enjoy a tasty insect treat. Birds, insects, reptiles, animals don't threaten the integrity of our environment the way chemicals + other human products do. We can't live without them. They will thrive without us. Please base all your decisions on what is best for nature + wildlife. They'll be here long after humans are gone - that is if humans don’t destroy the entire planet before we become extinct. Earth could easily become a planet that can no longer sustain life. Saving ourselves might depend on if we start to consider + save a Plover + its natural habitat.
