I am writing in opposition to changes to the permitting process for corporations taking water.
We have been through this before with the last Liberal government, when Nestle was extracting huge volumes of water from Guelph's aquifer, possibly affecting the sustainability of the municipal water supply and paying almost nothing for the privilege. In addition, they were doing so to bottle the water in plastic, which we are learning, increasingly, breaks down and collects as microscopic particles in our tissues.
I am calling on this government to do nothing to make it easier for corporations to take out water. Uphold your duty to consult Indigenous Nations as required by provincial and constitutional law.
Treat water as a public trust, not a private asset. Finally, no decisions like this should be made without consulting experts who work with conservation authorities and ecologists who can advise when this kind of thing is a bad idea. It is entirely irresponsible for a government to act first and apologize later when damage is already done, when teams of experts are available to prevent the wrong doing in the first place.
