Piping plovers are endangered and must be protected by law. It is the responsibility of all levels of government to protect these birds by (1) heavily restricting (or eliminating) mechanical raking that destroys their habitat, (2) banning dune alteration, and (3) protecting piping plover nests with fenced buffer zones and natural predator mitigation. This includes preventing their habitat from being developed for commercial purposes. The government must also implement advice and guidance from bird experts, such as those at Bird Canada, to help create and implement this plan. If the proposal includes the “commitment to… continuing to protect the area’s natural… heritage,” then the protection of piping plovers must be included in this plan in order to achieve this goal.
