These changes, which aim to support the Town of Wasaga Beach’s Tourism Enhancement Proposal, pose a serious threat to the ecological integrity, public ownership, and long-term sustainability of Wasaga Beach Provincial Park.
The proposal to remove Beach Areas from the park and transfer ownership to the Town of Wasaga Beach for redevelopment is deeply concerning. This plan would result in the loss of approximately 60 hectares of protected land, including critical habitat for the endangered piping plover and mature sand dunes that serve as natural flood barriers.
Wasaga Beach Provincial Park is not only one of Ontario’s most visited parks, but also a vital ecological zone that supports biodiversity and offers recreational opportunities to countless residents and visitors.
I urge the Ministry to prioritize the protection of Ontario’s provincial parks.
