The decision to sell sections of Wasaga beach is concerning for local business, environmental protection and recreation.
From a tourism standpoint, Wasaga beach is already the most visited beach in Canada (according to AMA/CAA) with over 2 million visitors annually. This lends further questioning to the reason of “to boost tourism”. Perhaps it would be better to see energy going towards local business grants and finding strategies that encourage visitors to shop locally.
Such a heavily trafficked area NEEDS support and adequate relief as seen by the tireless efforts by Ontario Parks staff. This region would see significantly more environmental damage and irreversible impacts to the ecosystems with lacking support by Ontario Parks, replaced with uninterested monitoring by investors.
Wasaga beach is home to endangered species such as the Piping Plover - whom half of their population has been produced at wasaga beach since 2007 (www.birdscanada.org). This beautiful park is also home to the at-risk Eastern Hog-nosed Snake, with wasaga offering a sanctuary and playing a vital role in keeping them off the endangered list, threatened greatly by the already overwhelming amount of development in the area (Canada.ca).
Beyond endangered species Wasaga beach plays a key role in growing up in and experiencing Ontario summer. From local ice cream shops to walks along the main drag, wasaga offers beautiful sunsets and days of adventure for surfers, families, boaters and sun-tanners of all ages.
It’s up to each and every one of us to protect the worlds longest freshwater beach for future generations to enjoy and experience the beauty this province has to offer. Wasaga beach is not a corporate asset to be sold and negotiated, rather a vital part of Ontarios wilderness that deserves to be loved, respected and protected.
Thank you.
