Piping Plovers are in trouble and with the protection and management of their habitat by the Province of Ontario at Wasaga Beach Provincial Park, they have started to make a small come-back in the past 18 years. Now the government wants to hand over control of the important nesting beaches of the Piping Plover to the Town of Wasaga Beach. If this transfer occurs, I would like to see the Province of Ontario Government include in the terms conditions that the Town of Wasaga Beach must make provisions to support conservation and habitat protection of the Piping Plover.
These things should include items such as protecting their habitat by restriction mechanical raking of the beaches that they use and putting up fenced buffer zones against people and predators.
The Town should have to commit to providing funding towards preserving the Piping Plover and its nesting habitat.
I hope that the Ontario Government doesn't destroy all the progress we have made with the Piping Plover in the name of development. We can have both, protected species and development if we all work together.
