I oppose the Ontario government’s plan to remove provincial park protection from parts of Wasaga Beach Provincial Park and sell the land for “Destination Wasaga” development.
I am equally concerned by the proposal to weaken the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act (PPCRA), which protects all provincial parks and reserves from secret selloffs without Legislative Assembly approval.
Every inch of Wasaga Beach Provincial Park, and all other parks, belongs to all Ontarians. None should be sold to developers or transferred, even to the Town of Wasaga Beach.
These lands are not just for recreation and tourism, they preserve rare ecosystems, such as globally imperilled freshwater dunes and piping plover nesting sites, which survive only through the expertise of Ontario Parks staff. The Town does not have the resources or expertise to protect these sensitive habitats alongside intensive tourism.
Even worse, the proposed “legislative amendments” to the PPCRA appear designed to make it easier to sell off parks across Ontario by removing the requirement for a vote in the Legislature. If the intent were only to sell Wasaga Beach lands, the government could simply follow the current process.
I strongly urge you to oppose both the selloff of any Wasaga Beach Provincial Park land and any weakening of the PPCRA’s protections. Thank you.
