I oppose this transfer of provincial park land that includes endangered species habitat to the township of Wasaga Beach. The township is not equipped with the knowledge or the funds to properly support the Piping Plovers and their incredibly sensitive and rare habitats. They have made it clear that their interests are in development and maintaining a groomed beach, not in species at risk conservation, and this land transfer will leave a critically endangered species with no provincial protection.

If the transfer goes through, it should at the very least include the following conditions - prohibit grooming or destruction of their habitats of any kind year round; require consultation with experts like Birds Canada before any decisions are made regarding the plover habitat as the township has no knowledge on the birds and their ecology; require funding that will match the extensive monitoring and stewardship efforts that have been allocated by the provincial park staff for ongoing monitoring efforts; protect nests by fencing these areas off to create a sufficient buffer from foot traffic; and continue mitigation efforts for predators.
