I am writing to express my concern regarding this land transfer agreement. My concern primarily lies with the protection and management of important Piping Plover habitat that is located on this stretch of Wasaga Beach.
Wasaga beach is the best Piping Plover habitat left in Ontario, producing over half of the provinces young plovers since 2007. Piping Plover are endangered, and require undisturbed expanses of shoreline for nesting. The province (Ontario Parks) currently protects this habitat at Wasaga Beach, but if the land transfer occurs, the town will responsible for conservation of this critical habitat and fragile species. The province and Birds Canada have worked hard to protect their habita/nests and engaged with locals to raise awareness through public outreach and events.
I strongly oppose the land transfer to the town of Wasaga for these reasons. If the land transfer goes through the province MUST be involved with developing a plan for habitat management and protection of this species going forward.
