This proposed changed is absolutely shameful and should not be approved. As Tim Gray says “Provincial Parks belong to the people of Ontario and are meant to be protected forever. It is appalling that the current government is trying to give away big parts of one of our most popular parks, and make changes to the legislation that protects all of our Provincial Parks”. The park belongs to the people of Ontario, not to developers. We must protect the largest freshwater beach in the world, not create more development. Part of what makes Wasaga so special is how natural the area has remained. People want to see forests and the lake, not a hotel or a parking lot. We must protect the park for current and future Ontarian's, but also the environment that is currently there. The beach is home to numerous species, including the endangered piping plover. Further, the beach provides important ecological and stabilizing functions including providing a protective buffer against high water, wind and storm events for private or adjacent lands. At a time when so much environmental harm is occurring it’s downright embarrassing our government is looking to destroy 60% of one of our largest parks. Ultimately, we must protect Wasaga Beach and I worry about the precedent this proposal would set regarding other natural areas in Ontario. Part of what makes Ontario a great place to live is the access to beautiful natural areas and the enjoyment of nature. Please do not sell away this joy to the highest bidder, as once it is gone there will be no getting it back. Why are you threatening what brings tourists to the area in the first place? Support the town without threatening the park. Sincerely, a concerned Ontarian with numerous fond childhood and current memories of Wasaga Beach.
