I am against the legislative amendments to the Provincial Parks Act to allow the transfer of Provincial Park land to the town of Wasaga Beach.
I feel Wasaga Beach Provincial Park should retain all of its lands as they are now. I agree with groups like Environmental Defence that say A Provincial Park is meant to be protected and managed to protect its ecological integrity and Provincial Parks are dedicated to the public - to the people of Ontario. They are meant to be protected forever.
Transferring the land proposed to be removed to the town of Wasaga Beach would be a disaster. They have been hostile to conservation efforts in the past. They have expressed opposition to it being protected even when they didn't own it. Once the land is theirs and unprotected, they will destroy habitats by for eg. raking the beach as they desired before.
I feel the Wasaga Beach Provincial Park has done a wonderful job maintaining the natural environment. I feel if the land was not protected the local wildlife and environment would be at risk. I do not believe the town's promises that it would protect the environment.
Wasaga Beach is Ontario's most popular Provincial Park for a reason - it's because it's unique in the world and has been preserved and there is a balance between tourism and ecological protectioon.
I am particularly worried for the New Wasaga and Allenwood Beach areas. They are so beautiful and natural. I have been going there for precisely that reason for over fifty five years.
