The notion that you can just remove endangered and threatened migratory birds from Ontario’s protected species list because they are listed under SARA is completely misguided and a big mistake. The federal government always gave provinces the first opportunity to protect species and their critical habitat on non-federal lands, in essence delegating this responsibility to you. It doesn’t have the staff or resources to all of a sudden ensure SARA compliance on provincial Crown lands or private lands! For Ontario to walk away from protecting these birds under the guise of eliminating duplication is totally irresponsible since in reality there will be nobody left to protect them.
