I am firmly opposed to this proposal and would urge the province to reinstate the former Endangered Species Act. There is simply no sufficient justification to ever exempt projects from thorough, evidence-based review and permitted process, or to risk degradation of critical habitat. The conservation of biodiversity is invaluable and cannot be measured against the supposed economic benefits of any activity that would hinder our already meager conservation efforts.
I would urge the government to reconsider its priorities, establish an enforceable governance structure for species conservation, and pursue a more collaborative approach to cooperation with federal legislation on species at risk.
