It strips cities of local authority and decision-making, even when projects are supported by evidence and local residents. It will worsen traffic congestion, not reduce it. The government’s ownexperts have consistently said that bike lanes are not a cause of gridlock. It will make roads more dangerous. Protected bike lanes prevent serious injuries and deaths for people biking, walking, and driving. With these in mind I strongly urge the governnment to amend Bill 60 so that it would respect the authority of municipalities in terms of traffic congestion. The fact of the matter is the needs of Toronto differ from that of Waterloo or Kitchener or Ottawa and as such it is irresponsible for the province to meddle in issues it simply does not understand or wish to.
