This new policy is a major power grab, plain and simple. It completely shuts down local input and decision-making, even when city projects have solid evidence and strong support from residents. This top-down control is set to make our traffic problems worse, not better. Despite what the policy might imply, the government's own experts have repeatedly said that protected bike lanes are not the cause of gridlock.
Frankly, this move will also make our streets less safe. Protected bike lanes are a proven way to prevent serious injuries and deaths for everyone...people biking, walking and driving. Plus, it threatens other crucial things our communities rely on like efficient transit lanes, safe pedestrian crossings, outdoor patios, and school street programs. Ultimately, by forcing cities into old-school, car-focused street designs, this initiative actively works against our climate goals and public health. It's a step backward for smart, modern urban planning. Let's do better for our future rather than short term, bandaid solutions that are half baked.
