Bill 60 should be voted down
1- It strips cities of local authority and decision-making, even when projects are supported by evidence and local residents.
2- It will worsen traffic congestion, not reduce it. The government’s own experts have consistently said that bike lanes are not a cause of gridlock.
3- It will make roads more dangerous. Protected bike lanes prevent serious injuries and deaths for people biking, walking, and driving.
4- It threatens other uses of road space that communities rely on, including transit priority, safe crossings, patios, curbside access, and school streets.
5- It undermines climate goals and public health by locking cities into car-dependent street designs.
6- While commuting by bike down Jarvis street in Toronto over the summer - does not have any bike lane - was run over by a car that entered my lane without signaling and the driver never looked at their blind spot/never hit the brakes. He also tried to make a quick get away but was stopped before they could get away. Was hospitalized at St Mike's and lost days from work. Needed to replace key bike parts and buy a new helmet. This would not have happened had there been an actual bike lane like on Richmond Street where cars are physically separated from cyclists. During the colder months I drive to work and having the physical barriers for bike lanes also helps with control the traffic flow.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
A concerned cyclist
