Transportation is a core part of the day for most people. Getting to work, visiting friends, buying groceries, going to events, etc. If everyone uses a car for transportation, gridlock will continue to worsen. As the populations of cities grow, the streets won't be able to widen enough to accommodate everyone's cars. Cities would be primarily roads and parking lots with very little room for actual destinations. It is essential that public and active transit be prioritised over cars. Cars are useful for certain tasks, such as transporting large equipment, but a car should not be the easiest method to transport a person from one location to another within a city. Public transit needs to be prioritised. Active transit, such as cycling, is essential for supporting local circulation, where the number of people isn't high enough to justify busses. Active transit is also incredibly useful for short trips, regardless of the availability of public transit. Cycling provides independence for young teens that can't drive and may want to bike 3 minutes from a train station to their destination instead of walking for 20 minutes. Dedicated bike lanes protect young and old cyclists alike from cars and trucks. It is unacceptable that one person's desire to get to their destination using a car puts more vulnerable road users (pedestrians, cyclists, etc.) at high risk of injury. Active and public transit is also in line with reducing emissions that contribute to greenhouse gasses. Even electric cars require a lot of materials to assemble. The government should do its part to simplify the choices that improve the lives of citizens as a whole, which including decreasing our negative environmental impact. Active (and public) transit are also much more affordable than car ownership. Help people make good economic decisions by increasing their safety as they bike throughout their city.
