As a lifelong Toronto cyclist who cycles not for pleasure but for work (to get to my office each day), Bill 60 will cause direct harm to me and my safety.
This bill revokes the authority of cities to make decisions that are right for themselves, even about projects that are supported by evidence and local residents.
Moreover, it will worsen traffic congestion, not reduce it. I will be forced to ride my bike (slowly) in car lanes instead of bike lanes, blocking traffic, and I will do so daily, on the major roads I need to take to get to work. The government’s own experts have consistently said that bike lanes are not a cause of gridlock.
Lastly, this bill will make roads more dangerous. Protected bike lanes prevent serious injuries and deaths for people biking, walking, and driving. There are decades of clear evidence supporting this. More vulnerable road users will die, and for no benefit to anyone other than the PC's next election. This is self-serving, cynical governance that will kill Ontarians.
