South western Ontario is hot and humid in the summer. Major centres like London need safe cycling trails to Lake Huron and lake Erie Beaches. This includes safe cycling infrastructure within the lake communities of Grand Bend and Port Stanley. If this is done well, it could reduce summer traffic congestion and enhance tourism. Done well would include consideration for tree cover to provide shade along the way and rest stops like we used to have on provincial highways. Providing shade will require the will to purchase narrow strips of land maybe 5 to 10 metres wide, adjacent to Provincial highways and County roads. The trees planted along the bike trail will further help in the fight against climate change, benefit the adjacent farms by providing protection from winds that reduce crop yields and benefit adjacent highways by reducing blowing snow in the winter. Its win/win/win!
