I am opposed to the proposed regional consolidation of Ontario’s conservation authorities and boundary changes that would undermine the protection of our environment.
These authorities play a vital role in safeguarding watersheds, managing floods, and protecting endangered species. Merging or redrawing their boundaries is not efficiency — it’s environmental deregulation in disguise. The proposal opens the door to easier approvals for development on lands that should remain protected, including wetlands and habitats critical to species already at risk.
Conservation decisions must be made by those who understand the local ecology and community needs. This plan erodes that connection and replaces it with centralized control and reduced oversight. Ontario’s environment is not a bureaucratic inconvenience; it is the foundation of our health, economy, and climate resilience.
If this government is serious about protecting people and property from climate-related disasters, it must strengthen — not dismantle — the conservation authorities that have protected us for over 70 years. I urge the government to reject this proposal and commit to science-based, locally informed environmental governance.
