I cycle, use public transit, and walk in the City of Toronto. I like to believe that in Ontario we are moving towards making our transportation and our streets safer, cleaner, and basing our decisions on evidence, science, and traffic and transportation engineering.
I am appalled when I see what Bill 60 is doing. It is a step in the wrong direction.
Taking the power to make decisions locally from the municipal governments and giving the province the power to make arbitrary decisions about our local communities is making streets and communities more dangerous, especially when these arbitrary decisions are not fact and evidence based.
Population densities in my community are forecast to grow at an alarming rate. The current system of cars jammed in the streets will not handle this growth. Our local community leaders need to make changes with long term planning in mind. Changes that will create a safe environment for streets, schools, local businesses, pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. Bill 60 takes these decisions out of local hands, and makes our living space less safe.
I also feel that our local government is better equipped to handle environmental decisions. Long lines of idling cars are part of the problem. Biking, pedestrian, and transit infrastructure are part of the solution.
I really feel that Bill 60 is not in the interest safe and vibrant communities, and it does not have the foresight and long term goals of our cities and towns in mind.
In the interest of safety, fighting climate change, and happy thriving communities, I sincerely hope that Bill 60 is not allowed to pass.
Thank You
