I strongly oppose the proposed amendments in Schedule 5 of Bill 60 that restrict municipalities from reducing motor vehicle lanes when installing new bicycle lanes.

Bicycle infrastructure is critical for developing sustainable and resilient urban transport systems. Encouraging cycling as a viable alternative to car use can significantly reduce traffic congestion, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and improve air quality in our cities.

Promoting active transportation through expanded bike lanes contributes to public health by encouraging physical activity. This shift has the potential to alleviate urban health challenges such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and mental health issues associated with sedentary lifestyles.

Cycling is a zero-emission mode of transport that plays an essential role in reducing our carbon footprint. By limiting municipalities' ability to implement bike-friendly infrastructure, we risk undermining progress towards environmental sustainability goals.

Dedicated bicycle lanes improve safety for cyclists and motorists alike by clearly delineating spaces for each mode of transportation, thereby reducing conflicts and accidents on the roads.

Enhanced cycling infrastructure can stimulate local economies by increasing accessibility to businesses and fostering vibrant street life. Moreover, it reduces healthcare costs associated with sedentary lifestyles and pollution-related illnesses.

The proposed amendments undermine local autonomy, preventing municipalities from designing transportation systems that best meet their unique urban challenges and community needs.

As experts in the field of urban planning and transportation, we recognize the importance of integrating diverse modes of transport to create equitable, efficient, and sustainable cities. I urge a reconsideration of these legislative changes to support comprehensive transportation strategies that include robust cycling infrastructure.
