I am struck by the cynical name of Bill 60 - Fighting Delays, Building Faster Act - which escalates Bill 212 and proposes prohibiting any municipality from installing bike lanes where car lanes are reduced. Despite masses of evidence that commutes times for drivers are barely affected, that safety for cyclists, pedestrians and drivers is increased, the Ford Government will not listen to reason. The rule of law is being ignored in the refusal to honour the legal powers of municipalities. This province has been a stable and safe place for many decades because of putting collective needs first, for upholding public safety. Placing the needs of car drivers first is yet another crass attempt to play to the Doug Ford's base. Once again Ford is acting as an autocrat by using the sledgehammer of the 'notwithstanding clause' to role over the powers of elected officials in municipalities across the province.
This bill is a feat of political grandstanding, distraction and cynical 'flooding the zone' tactics taken out of the Heritage 2025 playbook. We no longer have a democracy when one level of government is oppressing other levels of government for its own political gain.
