I appreciate the government's intention to improve consistency, reduce duplication and strengthen watershed management through the proposed consolidation of conservation authorities. Better coordination and continued delivery of essential services as flood forecasting and water protection is positive.
But I have 2 main concerns:
1. Potential Loss of Jobs from reducing 36 conservation authorities to 7 will certainly affect stuffing numbers. I noticed there was no mention of how current technical and frontline staff will be retained in the consolidation. Losing skilled personnel and the source of income of multiple families would not only weaken the undermine the goal of improved and available service but also increase the level of unemployment in the province that is already a crisis due to the trade war with the US.
2. Centralized operation may make it harder to respond to local issues. Regional authorities could struggle to maintain the same level of local knowledge and rapid response to flooding and erosion risks in local municipalities.
I encourage the province to ass clear plans on job protection, staffing and service delivery to local municipalities.
