Conservation authorities were created 50 year ago in reaction to Hurricane Hazzle that caused wide spread flooding and killed 8 people. The authority boundaries are based on the watershed boundaries and have 50 years of local knowledge, understanding of specific areas and experts on staff to mitigate natural disasters in those areas. They are responsible for making recommendations of where to build and based on knowledge of local flood-plane areas. This proposed amalgamation would dismantle a system that is in place to protect all Ontarian’s. I do not agree with this plan to shrink the conservation authorities from their present numbers and knowledge base.
