I'm commenting to express my strong opposition to the sections of the 2025 budget bill that would overhaul Ontario’s conservation authorities by consolidating 36 local agencies into seven and placing them under a new provincial agency.
Conservation authorities are on the front lines of flood protection, drinking water safety, and watershed health. Their strength is local expertise and governance. Merging 36 authorities into seven “mega-authorities,” with no new ongoing provincial funding, risks weakening local oversight, slowing permitting, and creating confusion at exactly the time climate change is increasing flood, drought, and erosion risks.
