Having served on a conservation authority board for 16 years and volunteered as well for another 10, I know that it has done wonderful work helping prepare our landowners and visitors for Climate Change which is threatening all in the Great Lakes region. The local authority knows, in great detail the areas of threat and know the local landowners well. Going to a large regional one will destroy this relationship. Having worked on the Source Water Protection Regional committee which was only 4 local authorities was very difficult because the staff of the larger CA did not know our area well enough to be effective plus there was way too much travel for meetings which added to environmental damage. As far as red tape our local authorities that are small make things move quickly.
A Conservative government set up the original CAs because erosion had become a major concern and the CAs have turned that around and more. They are well respected in our area. Why is a Conservative Government moving to destroy conservation in Ontario? Please rethink this proposal. You will destroy something Conservatives should be proud of as they are responsible for this great movement. Education is an important part of the work Conservation Authorities do that you have already removed from their mandate. You give them so little money to do the great work they do and yet are still trying to destroy them. Why? Climate Change is the biggest threat to our future. Please listen!
