Consolidating Ontario’s conservation authorities is not only misguided, but deeply irresponsible. These organizations have worked for decades to safeguard biodiversity, protect sensitive habitats, and support species at risk, in spite of limited governmental support and policies that have already contributed to environmental degradation. Their work is effective precisely because it is local, watershed-based, and responsive to the ecological conditions of each region.

A “one-size-fits-all” model cannot replace this. Flattening Ontario’s conservation governance will reduce ecological oversight, weaken community-based management, and increase long-term risks to the environment and public safety. The consequences of this proposal will extend far beyond the natural world; they will affect everyone who depends on clean water, stable ecosystems, and resilient landscapes.

The desire to remove administrative barriers for economic growth is understandable, but economic strength is meaningless if the systems that sustain the province are damaged beyond repair. A healthy environment is the foundation of a healthy economy, and dismantling the very institutions that protect it is a short-sighted and harmful decision.
