I do not agree with this proposal. Our province is very large, with many different areas of varied topography.
For example my property fronts onto the Upper Thames conservation and the rear of my property backs onto the Grand River Conservation zone. There are commutties that take their drinking water from the Grand River Conservation Authority zone. As a province that has already had a deadly drinking water scandal, we don't need another.
Our small community also had one of those people who wanted to build in a certain spot on his property, so he moved the drainage ditch. Unfortunately this caused flooding in houses a concession over, which our township and Conservation Authority was able to quickly trace back to the original homeowners deed and to have it quickly rectified.
A village close to us was denied expansion, for good reason. A city close to us gets all of its fresh water from a swamp next to the village. There are farming and building rescrictions around this whole area and for a very good reason.
Our township is promoting the burying of drainage ditches to help with erosion, tree overgrowth and fertilizer runoff. This will help the water quality and help reduce taxpayors costs.
A quick and easy example of knowing your zone, our neighbor wanted us to fill in our drainage ditch so it would be easier to cut his lawn. We refused, as this would increase the chance of our property flooding during a major downpour. It took 5 years before we had rain that filled that drainage ditch, but it did happen and we were very happy that we did not give into our neighbors demands.
Our Conservation areas are the same way, the staff know their zones and what they need to do to keep the waterways safe! I do not agree with reducing the Conservation Areas Zones! It will be too much and make it easier for people to do illegal actions.
