This change is unwarranted and not in the favour of water, residents, land, or species of Ontario.
The proposed goal of 'efficiency' is vague and unsupported. The 7 proposed areas are so large it could take a half a day to drive from one end to the other - this is not efficiency. Our local lands are best supported by the people that know it best - the local conservation authorities. I support keeping conservation decisions rooted in our local community.
Should efficiencies be desired, consider process efficiencies - a unified permitting system to remove necessity for each unique CA to have their own, or processes that benefit all local authorities.
Instead of merging the entire system, please listen to the experts at HCA and their suggestions for Ontario to achieve better results:
* Setting clear, consistent provincial standards across all conservation authorities, and holding everyone accountable to them.
* Investing in shared technology, such as the provincial permitting portal, within the current structure.
* Providing stable provincial funding to strengthen core programs and modernize operations.
* Working directly with municipalities, Indigenous partners, conservation authorities, and residents before making any major changes
