I do not support this proposed consolidation of conservation authorities to large regional entities. The current system of watershed based management is more representative of existing landforms and geology that the broad sweeps represented in the current proposal. As an example, the Lake Erie region as proposed includes heavier, flood prone low lying soils in the west end of the zone with a sand plain in the central region and heavier soils toward the eastern end. I fail to see how rolling these all into one centrally administered zone can adequately capture all of the varied needs of the citizens of this zone. The same can be seen in all of the other collapsed conservation authorities proposed. The only benefit I see is that it serves to reduce administrative burdens to development and does not appear to protect our freshwater resources or landforms that contribute to ecosystem and citizen healthy and safe communities.
If there is a need for a review of regulations/operations of the existing organization of Conservation Authorities then this needs to be addressed in a much more comprehensive review with respect for how they can address the features of the landscape, not the apparent interests of those who seek easier ability to develop lands of questionable value to the landscape.
