I strongly oppose the proposed amalgamation of the Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority (SSMRCA) into a new Northeastern Ontario Regional Conservation Authority.
The SSMRCA plays a critical role in our community in maintaining conservation lands, reviewing development proposals, and supporting safe and sustainable recreational use. As a member and supporter of the Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club, I rely on the lands managed by the SSMRCA for public access and trail recreation. The Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club works closely with our Regional CA, and this partnership has created high-quality outdoor experiences for residents and visitors alike.
I am concerned that the proposed consolidation will:
- Impact recreational trail management. Any delays or reductions in local capacity could affect trail maintenance, land use agreements, and public access that our community groups depend on.
- Disrupt long-standing community partnerships. Local relationships between conservation authorities, municipalities, volunteers, and recreation organizations have taken decades to build.
I respectfully request that the Province prioritize local representation, local operational control, and protection of northern community interests before moving forward with any restructuring.
One size does not fit all in Ontario. It has been a disservice to our community when amalgamations have occurred in other sectors like healthcare. Southern Ontario ministers do not understand the needs of individual northern communities. I urge the Ministry to ensure that any new structures preserve the strong local stewardship and community partnerships that protect both our natural environment and our recreational opportunities.
