I have many concerns about this governments proposal to merge Ontario's Conservation Authorities. I live within the Long Point Region Conservation Authority. Which, I believe, has done a good job of acquiring land to protect source water, different species of trees and a diverse array of other plants and animals that make our area so beautiful. My husband and I enjoy using this land for hiking. Landowners in Oxford County and Norfolk County give their land to LPRCA. I fear that if the conservation authorities merge and become massive, landowners will no longer give their land. What will happen to this land? Will Doug Ford allow it to be sold to developers? So many people enjoy being in nature, weather it be hiking, camping, hunting or for educational purposes. We cannot keep cutting down trees and removing our precious Carolinian Zone forests.
Conservation authorities are experts on their land. They are already too stretched to carry out vital invasive removal. Invasive plants that are collapsing our ecosystem. Once it's gone there is no rebuilding it.
The so-called cost benefit for consolidation is a spreadsheet exercise, not one rooted in understanding ecology, biodiversity, and conservation in general.
Do Not Merge these Centres.
Fund appropriate protection for our environment. This current government seems to dislike the environment and looks at it as something that doesn't matter, but it is the only one we have...so let's protect it!
Bigger is never better and in centralizing power for Conservation Authorities, you will take away local knowledge and interest. It has been very stressful and upsetting for me to even think of this happening to "get shovels in the ground faster". We have already lost more than 90% of the Carolinian zone to development. Conservation Authorities should be properly funded so that future generations, my children and others, can enjoy the natural beauty that this province has to offer.
