I find the proposal confusing and devious. The material makes it sound like this will be an improvement for conservation management of watersheds, species, conservation lands. Problem is language like "better align conservation authorities’ services with provincial priorities on housing, the economy, infrastructure and climate resilience" makes it clear the proposal is a ruse to allow developers to build on prime farmland, scenic forest areas and by streams.
It is disheartening to hear public figures in government so lacking in understanding the reason for local based conservation authorities.
How will "regional conservation authorities that continue to align with watershed boundaries" serve very specific areas throughout Ontario without being staffed locally? I live in the Hamilton Conservation Authority and have volunteered in educational programs. Show us more detail to demonstrate that staff will remain in and work within municipal defined communities.
Conservation Authorities already report to the local municipal. The proposal seems to have this confused or is again is trying to give an impression of something in place, but will actually be cut or downgraded.
"A provincial board-governed agency – to provide centralized leadership, efficient governance, strategic direction, and oversight of Ontario’s conservation authorities" . I thought the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks was doing this.
Destruction of watersheds will result in serious flooding. this is already happening and municipalities and the provincial government are spending millions if not billions because of poor decisions on land managment that favours developers. Current case of the proposed highway scheduled to cut through the Holland Marsh - the best farmland in Ontario, all to shave off 3 to 4 minutes in drive time.
Over 50 years ago environmentalists and other associated scientists warned of the impact of poor land management and fossil fuel destruction. Noone should be surprised by extreme weather, wildfires, floods, infestations and drought. We were well advised and the politicians chose to legislate with their heads in the sand.
This proposal is another example of poor land management in favour of developers who will build for the most wealthy in Ontario. We are starting to see homes that can not be insured because they are in fire zones and flood zones that have developed because as a Province we have only implemented weak environmental policies.
This plan needs to be revised significantly and presented with out deviant language. I live where poor watershed management will impact my residence.
