I am writing to express concern regarding proposals to consolidate conservation authorities across Ontario. Conservation authorities provide locally tailored environmental management, watershed protection, and flood prevention programs. Their governance structure reflects regional priorities, land-use considerations, and community engagement, ensuring that decisions are responsive to local conditions.
Consolidation risks undermining this local expertise by centralizing decision-making, potentially delaying responses to flood events, weakening watershed management, and reducing the effectiveness of programs that protect natural habitats and drinking water sources. Communities across Ontario, particularly smaller municipalities, rely on conservation authorities for site-specific knowledge and stewardship initiatives that cannot be standardized across the province.
Maintaining locally accountable conservation authorities ensures that environmental planning, public education, and emergency response remain closely aligned with community needs. I urge the provincial government to consider the long-term ecological, social, and economic impacts before moving forward with consolidation measures.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
