I understand and respect the government’s intent to improve efficiency and accelerate permitting in support of housing development. However, I am not convinced that the proposed structural changes will achieve those aims. More importantly, there is no clear evidence that consolidation would maintain the long-standing responsibilities Conservation Authorities have upheld for decades, including watershed protection, environmental integrity, and accountable service to local communities.
In my view, any substantive reform to a public system—particularly one as critical as watershed management and environmental protection—must be driven by independent, evidence-based analysis and shaped through thorough and meaningful engagement with affected stakeholders.
