We are living through a period of time where we need to increase attention and the prioritization of a natural region’s needs. While there are many pressing issues at this time, we cannot neglect the needs of our watershed’s and other regions of biodiversity. Southern Ontario is one of the most biodiverse parts of the country. Regional differences are substantial, with differing needs, concerns, and pressures facing specific environmental regions. I believe mass consolidation of regions into large governing bodies will greatly harm conservation work, and lead to further ecological deterioration of a region already suffering so greatly. It is wholly irresponsible to under prioritize the natural needs of our land. Without healthy ecosystems we ourselves will experience an unhealthy existence. There should be greater efforts to have tighter regional research and action to improve natural health in our developed slice of the world, allowing for programs that are tailored to a specific region and not bogged down by endless “red-tape”, funding complications, and resources spread too thin. The proposal, to me, seems like a huge step backwards, and a shady consolidation of power to simplify and assist in the further destruction of our struggling environment. I implore you not to take a short cut that will lead to more issues in the future. Appreciate the needs of the land, why the people living here need a healthy natural environment, and the importance of having a focused group that wholly understands the needs of a small, specific region to allow for said region’s needs to be addressed in a tailored fashion while receiving the needed resources.
