I would ask the provincial government to reconsider its proposal to consolidate Ontario's conservation authorities. It appears to be less an effort at streamlining and improved efficiency, and more of an effort to impose a "one-size-fits-all" approach to the complexity of watershed management. Redeploying management positions to 'front line' also makes little sense. What is meant by 'front line'? Tree-planting? Water sampling? It ignores the fact that there is a need for the ability to respond and make decisions locally, based on local conditions, knowledge and expertise. Finally, the creation of 'mega-authorities' seems likely to create a situation that is less, not more, responsive: another level of governance, slower not faster response times, and higher costs, not cost reductions.
