I’m opposed to the suggested amalgamation for many reasons. Smaller authorities can better advocate for the needs of their protected areas, and can manage their resources. Sometimes when areas become too big, difficult decisions have to be made such as which locations or issues receive priority attention and funding. This often leaves some areas more neglected or forgotten about because the other priorities appear more necessary. Smaller conservation authorities can take on and manage more things. I don’t think the province should have more control over conservation areas, especially as the Premier can’t be trusted not to sell off and build on the greenbelt that we desperately need to preserve and protect. If the province wants to make changes and build, they should have to consult various external conservation authorities to do so in order to ensure they meet important requirements. These higher standards will fade away if the government only has to consult themselves. We can’t trust that the right choices will be made if they amalgamate. My references? Ontario’s Education and Health Care systems. Let’s preserve as much of the environment as we can until someone comes in and makes real positive changes.
