Ford's plan to amalgamate Conservation Authorities has nothing to do with improvements or efficiencies. It is a blatant move on the government's part to bypass important checks and balances ensuring the preservation of sensitive and/or ecologically important land for the purpose of unfettered urban development.
Ford's government is not concerned about the impacts on land that is used unwisely. Their lack of concern will allow builders to cause irreparable damage creating severe hardships for future generations.
Protecting and managing land requires dedicated and skilled professionals who have a thorough understanding of a very specific geographic area and watershed. Many factors specific to the area significantly impinge on the land. Creating vast geographic areas will make it impossible to understand the specific threats that are unique to the watershed Action planning will become cumbersome and ineffective.
Ford must leave the current Conservation Authorized as they are and honour the mandate they were originally given. Conservation Authorities provide an essential service and their expertise must be respected, not eroded.
