I support the province’s leadership in developing a regulation for municipal asset management planning. Within this planning, I strongly support and urge the province to integrate green infrastructure planning and management into the regulation. Green infrastructure has proven to be more cost effective than built grey infrastructure and provides additional benefits for the adaptation and mitigation of climate change.
I specifically support the three recommendations of the Green Infrastructure Ontario Coalition from their consultation to the Ministry of Economic Development, Employment and Infrastructure:
1) Include green infrastructure in the definition of "Core Infrastructure Assets"; and
2) Make green infrastructure a mandatory component of municipal asset management policies, strategies and plans.
3) Identify best practices for green infrastructure in each of the key areas: Infrastructure asset inventory, levels of service, life cycle management and financial strategy.
We've seen effective implementation of green infrastructure asset management in places like New York and owe it to ourselves and future generations protect and maximize the nature in our urban environment.
