I am a student in ninth grade at Central Peel Secondary School. After gathering information on the proposed terms of the Greenbelt amendment, I conclude to disagree with it. I believe that future generations deserve the same luxuries that we are provided, conclusively this amendment will disrupt the future that the Greenbelt is able to offer them. To expand, by changing the terms of the Greenbelt amendment, we are disregarding long-term consequences. The original terms put-in-place ensure that the future holds an eco-friendly planet. In order to protect Ontario against urban sprawl, I propose that the new amendments be entirely or partially removed. Personally, the proposed changes will affect my community by causing an overall decline in community health. The Greenbelt is able to provide clean air and water, as well as local food, to obtain a sustainable economy. If these changes are made to the original Greenbelt regulations, the Greenbelt will be unable to provide a considerable amount of benefits in comparison to now. The amendments I suggest you consider removing are the following; 1.1, 1.2, and 2.2.1.4. Collectively, these amendments change high-quality goals to simple goals that cannot promise the same beneficial outcome. Amendment 1.1 changes “low-density urban sprawl” to “unmanaged growth”. This can lead to urban sprawl reaching productive farmlands and disrupting their significant work. As a result, there will be a decline in local food for years to come. Amendment 1.2 replaces multiple goals such as “a clean and healthy environment” and “social equity” with merely “environmentally sustainable”. The original goals will provide future generations with the same or possibly a better life than what we have. However, the new goal will only give them a standard one. Lastly, amendment 2.2.1.4 changes “towards the achievement of low-carbon communities” to once again “environmental sustainability”, taking away the assurance of a valuable resource from the future and leaving them with an at-most liveable community. As you can observe, the new amendments will undo the hard work of many Ontario citizens. Thank you for your time and consideration.
