I am concerned that the proposed changes will promote urban sprawl and will not adequately protect all employment lands other than a few that are specified. All current employment lands must be protected from conversion to non-employment uses such as residential. We must be committed to build communities where people can live, work and play within an accessible area.
The proposed changes will make it easier to expand urban boundaries without having to meet current justification requirements. This can lead to sprawl onto our valuable agricultural lands.
The proposed changes fail to address the Greater Golden Horseshoe's affordable housing problem and they appear to favour low-density sprawl. We need more housing options for renters and owners, within cities, and not sprawling subdivisions on farmland, forests and the sources of drinking water.
There are no references in the proposal to the climate crisis. Planning must be done carefully to address the climate change crisis by building compact, complete communities that are resilient, inclusive and sustainable.
