I am vehemently opposed to the proposed changes to the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal Act, 2017. Elected Local councils are the in the best position to determine what is the best use of land and zoning in their communities. An appointed board, with no accountability to the communities they rule on, should not have the ability to overturn arbitrarily the decisions arrived at through community input and consultation. The existing Local Planning Appeal Tribunal Act provided a fair and balanced mechanism to settle planning disputes between developers and municipal bodies. This legislation will not result in more affordable housing, but merely allow developers to run roughshod over the wishes of the community and the decisions made by their locally elected bodies.
