I wish to express my strong approval for the changes proposed by Bill 108.
As a young Ontarian, I believe that housing affordability is the most pressing issue our communities face. It is both an issue of fairness and sound economic policy.
The pre-Bill 108 legislative changes (in particularly the loss of the OMB) would have constricted supply further, driven up prices, and unfairly privileged the interests of older generations that did not face a housing or economic climate anything like young people are facing today. Intergenerational conflict was inevitable.
At the same, cheaper housing will improve the disposable income that younger generations are able to put back into the economy. It is widely recognized, for example, that young families with parents between the ages of 25-45 are the consumer engines of an economy. In other words, if young people are forced to overstretch their budgets on housing, the entire economy loses.
I find critics of the bill to be completely self-interested and out of touch.
Bravo for doing what is right for all Ontarians.
