Dear sir,
In my review of the draft Ontario Forest Sector Strategy I was disappointed that there was an emphasis on increasing the harvest and little emphasis on sustainability.
With increased mechanization and large multinational corporations often controlling key aspects of the industry I do not believe short term jobs harvesting trees as quickly as possible is a useful return on our natural resource. Our northern and rural communities need long term sustainable forest plans that generate well paying stable careers. Maximizing today's harvest only jeopardizes the long term sustainability of the forestry careers.
Ontario should also carefully assess if some areas of the province are better left as-is for future generations. In some remote areas the government would be effectively subsidizing the forest industry to harvest a slow growing low quality forest. I believe it would be better for Ontario to just leave those areas for future generations, it might be that in a 100 years time our great grand children will thank us for our foresight.
regards,
