Since 2004 the Leeds-Grenville Stewardship Council has been very helpful to me in making the transition from urban life to establishing a black walnut plantation on the family farm. Their available services through the Managed Forest Program, the local work programs, and the tree planting programs have enabled us to afford to retain our 114 acres as a woodland. The Managed Forest designation allowed our property taxes to remain at a level that we were not forced to plant the farm to bungalows.
We plan to begin a selective harvest of the natural stand of black walnut and American beech in the woodlot within the next cutting season.
