I strongly favor protecting Rondeau Park as a nature area, a goal that is inconsistent with the continued existence of cottages on the lakefront. While it is perhaps a fair compromise to allow current lease holders to continue to use their cottages within the park during their lifetimes (which is essentially what this lease extension provides for), it could also be argued that this was the intent of the previous extension.
I find that the leaseholders arguments for a less restrictive lease extension do not hold merit. Very few of the cottages within the littoral zone have any historical merit. The fees the park gains from the cottagers are inconsequential when compared to the overall park attendance. There is very little community within the park.
Rondeau Park will be greatly improved by the removal of the cottages.
