I strongly disagree with your ministry’s proposal to allow aggregate pits and quarries in the habitat of threatened and endangered species throughout the region’s Natural Heritage System.

We rely on a huge range of species within our communities, from turtles to bees, to provide us with essential services like clean up crews (for dead, decaying matter, healthy fertile soils etc.), pollination (without which most of our fresh produce and fruits wouldn't be possible) as well as pest control (recent studies in the US show that bats save the US economy billions of dollars in pesticides by eating moths detrimental to agriculture. Putting already at risk and struggling species in the crosshairs is irresponsible and will cost us, the taxpayers, a hell of a lot more in the long run.

Under existing rules, aggregates operations can already occur elsewhere in the Natural Heritage System, but not in the habitat of threatened or endangered species. Since the purpose of the Natural Heritage System is to protect biodiversity, the province must protect these lands from being dug up for pits and quarries.

Save our province money. Work with, not agaisnt the environment and LISTEN to researchers and experts instead of ONLY business's.
